Where Does Colour Analysis Originate From?
Colour theory originally started out with 19th century classical painters and artists needing to understand the seasons to better convey their work. For each season to be accurately portrayed, painters had to gain insight to their unique colours.
By observing nature they saw that each season has distinct colours that are reflective of its different aspects. Given the changing nature, the sun’s light reflects differently for each season which creates the diverse shades, hues, tints, and tones we see throughout the year. Think of winter and how the sun glares off the icy snow that brightens it landscapes.

During the consultation we drape fabric swatches near your face in a controlled lighting environment to observe how different colours interact with your complexion. What is the difference between 4-season and 12-season colour analysis?
The 4-season analysis identifies which of the four primary seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter, best matches your natural colouring. The 12-season analysis goes deeper, identifying which of three sub-seasons within your primary season is the most accurate fit. The 12-season result gives you a more refined palette with greater specificity for shopping, wardrobe building, and styling decisions.
How long does a colour analysis consultation take?
A 4-season consultation takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. A 12-season consultation takes approximately 90 to 120 minutes. Both include time for questions and a walkthrough of how to apply your palette.
Do I need to wear makeup for my colour analysis?
We recommend arriving without makeup or with as little as possible. Makeup alters skin tone, undertone, and the way light reflects off your face, which can affect the accuracy of the draping process. If you prefer to wear makeup, a natural or minimal look is fine.
How do I use my colour palette after the consultation?
Your palette is delivered as a digital overview and, depending on your package, a physical fabric swatch wallet book you can bring when shopping. Use it to evaluate clothing, accessories, and makeup colours before purchasing. Over time, applying your palette reduces the number of purchases that sit unworn and builds a more coherent, flattering wardrobe overall.
Do you offer colour analysis virtually?
No. All colour analysis at W10 is conducted in store at our Yorkville location to ensure accuracy under proper lighting conditions. Screen-based colour analysis cannot replicate the precision of in-person draping and is not a service we offer.
